When we told the girls we were going to move to Texas, I knew it would be a bit over their heads. They understand moving, they’ve already done that twice. But moving far away is abstract. When you don’t have a concept of states (although Ella does know continents), Texas may as well be the moon.
We were surprised when Ella was very excited about moving to Texas. Just excited as could be.
Then while skipping around and cheering, she was reciting what Texas was to her. “Chelsey was at Texas and we watched a movie and it rained!” And then it clicked with me on what Ella thought Texas was.
An exhibit at the Minnesota State Fair. Fail.
When we went to the fair, the Texas board of tourism had a large set-up that we visited. Loran was still trying to warm me up to the idea of Texas and we figured this would be a good way to see some Texas sights and learn a little before committing. There were several interactive stations. A trivia game, a movie, a virtual reality kayaking trip and green screen photos.
Obviously, it didn’t turn me off of Texas as a concept. It made an impression with Ella who was delighted to be moving to the fairgrounds.
Plus, we got this sweet photo out of the deal!
