This last weekend, we enjoyed our first non-family house guests. Our good friends from Minnesota, the McKinneys escaped winter for a long weekend in Austin and the weather cooperated perfectly. Currently, there is snow in our weather forecast, but last weekend? Sun, 60s/70s and gorgeous!
It was a blessing to have room for everyone, Hunter had his own room in my craft room (I put the scissors and paints away) and he was excited to spend his first night in his room. He very quickly claimed it as his. It was also the first time in a long time that we’ve had a baby in our house. Baby Brooke was sweet and cute as can be!
We took our outdoor loving friends to parks near our home, including Hamilton Pool and Reimer’s Ranch.
A gorgeous day at Hamilton Pool. We were the first car in the parking lot, joined shortly by two others. Needless to say, we had the place to ourselves. We did see a couple go swimming…despite the warm air, the water must have been chilly.
Another day, we were able to visit the appropriately named McKinney Roughs Nature Park where we went on quite the hike. We were able to meet up with one of Alex’s friends/former co-worker Tim who was fun to meet and talk with. We enjoyed the day, the walk, the company and the views. Hunter was a good tour guide, we didn’t even get lost!
The kids did a pretty good job of playing with one another. Lily had the biggest adjustment. Hunter is more of a leader, like herself, so there was some head-butting. Ella and Hunter got along great, no troubles. It was nice for Lily to get a little taste of her own medicine. Plus, we worked on teaching her how to stand up for herself beyond high pitched screaming or crying. The girls were very curious about Brooke, eventually overseeing some diaper changes and played with her a little.
Christy was able to join my Moms on the Run group for two runs. It was so fun to have a MOTR alumni at my classes. Since we’re new, my ladies don’t quite understand the magic of Moms on the Run. Having a friend run with us really meant a lot! Plus, the Daddies were left to hold down the fort while the Christys escaped. It was all good.
Reasons we were bad hosts: Ceder fever (cedar allergies) hit both Loran and I hard. So hard, I got pink eye. Seriously, who gets pink eye while hosting small children?? Loran kept having to take random naps when his allergies would get really bad. We took them to our favorite BBQ place…and it was SOLD OUT of meat. We redeemed ourselves with lunch the following day.
Fun things that happened: Ella and Alex became BFFs. She wanted to sit by him, hold his hand, and played with him constantly. This is big. Despite the fact that we traveled to Italy with them when Ella was around 18 months, as Ella grew, she and Alex had a rather complicated relationship. From around age 2-4, every time she saw him, she’d start screaming and that usually lasted a half hour or so, and usually, she’d throw up. Alex would distance himself from her and avert his eyes, not making eye contact with her until she’d finally warm up. It was ridiculous. But now, we’re obviously past that, because she’s slightly obsessed with him.
Things that make us old: We were in bed by 10-10:30 every night. We played cards, specifically Euchre, Alex and Christy taught us. I think I partially understood it. Alex and Loran went downtown to check out a bar, but we had to find one that wasn’t too young or too loud (remember we were in bed by 10:30? Bar night included). We had to Google “Totes Magoats” to figure out what it meant. It means “totally”. We heard it on a Peg+Cat episode…that’s a PBS Kids show. We’re so in our 30s!
Best quote of the weekend: “Those two bad girls aren’t being nice!” Hunter telling on Ella and Lily. That one made me laugh. Then I reminded the two bad girls to play nicely and share!
