This was the first year that Ella seemed to understand the concept of birthday. At her request, the weeks leading up to her birthday, we had to sing the “Happy Birthday” song over and over in her honor. Followed by “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. We held Ella’s party the day before her actual birthday on Sunday with our family. I didn’t invite friends this time, I figured it was probably the last year I could get away with a party that didn’t involve extra screaming children, goodie bags and some sort of inflatable structure. We had a brunch which was enjoyed by all. Ella’s theme this year was books. Anyone who knows Ella knows this girl loves to read. That’s what happens when you’re non-mobile for the first 20 months of life. You become a reader. Ella received a grand total of 39 books. Surprisingly, there were no duplicates within the party itself and even more surprising, there were no duplicates with books Ella already has in her 200+ library! She is a happy girl with all of her new books. Between new books and cupcakes, I’m not sure she could be happier!
Ella helped me prepare for the party by decorating her cupcakes. She had quite the assortment of sprinkles to choose from. We were off to a slow start with her picking individual colors and conservatively sprinkling them on each cupcake. The real fun started when she decided to rip the entire lid off of our 6 compartment sprinkle shaker. Suddenly, it was raining sprinkles off all sizes and shapes and there was great rejoicing and belly laughs! She finished the job quickly and thoroughly!

When asked what Ella would like to eat at her party, Ella immediately replied, “Birthday Pancakes, Birthday Apple Slices and Cupcakes!”

The last two years, Ella wouldn’t eat her cake. This year, there was no stopping her. She wasn’t so sure about the candles though.

The following day, Monday, was Ella’s actual birthday. She was so excited to be celebrated at school. For weeks, all she’d talked about was the crown she would get to decorate and wear. I knew, despite her excitement for the crown, she’d refuse to wear it. And, lo and behold, we arrived for her birthday celebration and her crown was there, just not on her head! Loran, myself, Lily and Aunt Chelsey were able to attend the celebration. We watched Ella hold the globe and circle the sun three times as we talked about her accomplishments each year. Ella passed out cupcakes to each of her classmates. They were pretty top heavy, so they kept rolling around the napkins, but she’d patiently try to readjust each friend’s cupcake so it was standing.
After Ella’s class celebration, we brought her to IHOP for more birthday pancakes. She was amazed by a restaurant that had so many pancakes. She had fun with everyone and even got to open one more gift – a Cabbage Patch Doll. She was interested in this new baby doll. Its name is Janis Chris. Ella calls her Jamis. Her favorite thing about Jamis is definitely the sandals on the doll.
Ella is a lucky girl. She’s been able to follow most meals with her leftover cupcakes and she’s loving it!
