A clean little girl in a clean, decorated house. It’s like a magazine for about .49 seconds.
Lillian’s smash cake – so cute. So close to destruction.
Sunday morning, we washed and scrubbed Lily down. We tamed her usual crazy hair and dressed her in finery to celebrate her first year. The house was decorated with shades of pink and purple and adorned with balloons with large numbers 1s on them. We had the family over for soups, salads and bread – and of course, cake. Both girls did a great job of mingling with guests. Lillian seemed to enjoy and appreciate each gift as it was opened. She was showered with amazing gifts. What a blessing to have such generous people in our life who love our daughters so dearly. There were a few moments during the party that I was genuinely choked up. Thinking back to that day when my baby girl came into the world. So quickly, so amazingly. Then flashing forward to the present to see our entire family surrounding her, joyful and happy – how could I not have that lump in my throat. The lump that reminds me of the love we are surrounded with. The amazing little daughters we have. Everything. An amazing day celebrating an amazing little girl surrounded by the ones we love.
Given Lily’s track record with most food placed in front of her, we figured her cake would be demolished and in her hair within seconds. Instead, she studied it intensely. I gave her a little taste and she was interested in the cake. However, she very daintily picked at it. She loved the cake and emerged from the highchair rather clean. Actually, nearly spotless by Lily standards. I’d say that was highly successful!
Now we’re slowly taking out each toy to play with. It’s been so interesting to watch both girls figure out the new toys and figure out how to share with one another. They’re growing quite skilled at fighting with one another and pushing the other’s buttons. It’s kind of funny to watch them deal with the other.
Here’s how tricky Lillian is…under the guise of play, she did the following: While having raspberries blown on her tummy by Grandpa, she took his glasses. While convincing Grandma to bounce her up and down, she took a charm off of Grandma’s necklace and popped it in her mouth. What a trouble-maker. Next up, pick-pocketing.
The aftermath. Note, this wasn’t all Lillian’s doing. Once the cake was removed, opportunistic family members picked at the pieces that hadn’t been used as baby play-doh.
Once the two little girls were done with their naps, we ventured outside for the first time in months for a walk! We were having tropical temperatures for February in Minnesota. Loran made us a great dinner and I watched the clock creep towards 6:22. The moment Lily took her first breath and became an individual part of our family. The moment we realized that we couldn’t imagine our family without Lillian. The moment my heart grew even larger than I could have imagined.
