Snow, melting, snow, more snow.

Last week, we had an incredible stretch of warm weather. The temps got up to the high 40s, low 50s – it was bliss. We lost a ton of snow. Moods were improved, people were out and about, carwashes were thriving. We were able to take our first walks of the year and Ella engaged in some serious puddle jumping. She even depleted her favorite puddle of water, due to all of her splashing.

But of course, it’s still February and we still live in Minnesota. We’re not out of the clear until May, sadly. We went into the weekend under a winter weather advisory. What started out quite slowly on Sunday, definitely picked up through the day. The 10+ inches of snow we were promised, was delivered. Luckily, we had the snow melt or I’m not sure where we would have piled it. It is beautiful and I remind myself that it’s February and it will be gone soon, unlike that snow from November…

I apparently needed some comfort foods to get me through the blizzard because our dinner consisted of: tomato soup, grilled cheese sandwiches (with bacon!) and homemade fries. My thighs were very comforted. Lillian was a terrorist during dinner and earned herself an early bath and bedtime. We spent the rest of our evening playing with Ella, who was not a terrorist and taught her the fine skill of playing with the Wii. We have decided she is not quite ready for bowling, however, she now holds the high score for the penguin game, which she adores, and she’s not half bad at snowboarding!

Lily woke up around 10pm and was wide awake. She watched some television with us and gulped down some milk. However, her antics woke up a peacefully sleeping Ella.  We then took turns tucking in a very awake Ella into bed, until finally at 11:45pm, she gave up and went to bed…zzzzz…..both parties were peaceful the rest of the overnight.

Monday morning, Ella and Lily were off of school because of President’s Day. Loran was up early to shovel us out. I decided we were going to bundle up and head out to play. I’ve been horrible about taking the girls out to play this winter. Of course, Lily isn’t very mobile, which is a problem to play in the snow. And we have so much snow it’s over Ella’s head. But, today, we were going out! It wasn’t too cold and fresh snow begs to be played in. We put Lily in her baby sled and Ella helped me pull her around. Ella wanted to go to Kathy and Rob’s house to play in their yard, so off we went. Ella enjoyed watching Rob shovel and followed him around until he went in. It took about 20 minutes to get everyone bundled and out the door, and I think we stayed out about 45, so it was pretty productive. Ella was very excited to go in for mandatory hot chocolate.

As you can see, Ella is completely excited to go outside to play in the snow. Lily is paralyzed with anticipation!

I give Ella hot chocolate in an espresso cup. She feels so grown-up with her perfectly sized mug. I love that she’s growing up and we’re able to start enjoying some of these rites of childhood!

Ella is becoming interested in wearing dresses. “Beautiful dresses” is what she calls them Everyday, I hear about which classmate was wearing a “beautiful dress”.  Every once in awhile, I’ll put her in a dress, but every time, the dress comes home in a plastic bag due to toileting incidents. Ella doesn’t have adequate dress control and her dress always ends up getting dunked in the toilet water. Such a bummer. Recently, we found a skirt at the Lands End outlet for $2. It’s clearly a uniform skirt as it’s a very fashionable tartan print. But, it’s $2 and solves the toilet problem. Ella thinks she’s been given a ball gown, she’s thrilled to wear her skirt. In an effort to save Ella’s United Airlines miles, we had to have some activity in her miles account that was due to expire in a few weeks. We used her miles number to purchase a fashionable little skirt and shirt combo from Wal-Mart, in an effort to save the miles by accruing 14 new miles. The outfit arrived late last week and as Ella watched me open it, she had to put it on, immediately. Never mind that she was wearing foot pajamas. That skirt was going on. And it stayed on until she was tucked into bed. Ella and her beautiful dress.
