Valentine’s Day. A day of love, chocolates, cards and making googly eyes to the one across the dinner table from you. A dinner table sporting a table cloth, made of real cloth. Our day sported all of those qualities and more.
Love: Loran came downstairs while I was getting ready for the day, complete with a pink sweater to tell me that he’d found Ella upstairs crying having sweat through her pajamas with a fever. She was also nauseated. So, my plans of dropping Ella off at school with her bag of 33 homemade Valentines for one class, 18 for the other and plans to join her class for their ice cream sundae party were cancelled. Instead, I set Ella up on the couch with blankets, pillows, a bucket and lots of love. We watched her favorite shows, and within a couple of hours, she was smiling and giggling with me. Lily was able to get an extra 1 1/2 hours of sleep and came downstairs dressed in a heart shirt. This bothered Ella. She was then completely put off that she was still in pajamas. In fact, she kept reminding me that it was, “almost lunch and I’m still in pajamas. I want a heart shirt like my sister.” Ella’s appetite returned around lunchtime and her fever went away. She requested cottage cheese and given her earlier stomachache, I opted out of that one. She instead devoured everything else placed in front of her. Eventually, she won that cottage cheese.
My little Valentine. Awake in pjs and sleeping in her heart shirt “like her sister”.
Cards: Loran had left cards for each of his ladies on the table before he left. We all enjoyed opening and reading our cards. It was such a nice surprise. While Ella was on the couch, we started making Valentine hearts with paper, dotters and crayons. Ella was slow to get in the action, but Lily was all over it. That girl LOVES to color. Within the last few weeks, it’s become her favorite activity. She will spend hours each day laying on the floor coloring. It’s adorable. So a few paper hearts turned into many paper hearts. All over.
Googly eyes: I sit across from Lillian. Case closed on that one.
Dinner table: Homemade baked penne with salads (and cottage cheese for the little ladies). We exchanged our gifts of chocolates, candies, picture frames, tie blankets and books for the girls along with the treats they received with others. And yes, we had a red table cloth and a table decorated with paper hearts, lots of paper hearts.
It wasn’t quite the Valentine’s Day we had planned, Ella wasn’t quite old enough to realize the fun she was missing at school and we made our own fun at home. And yes, I missed the fun to be had at school, because watching excited little children with bags brimming with cards and treats is joyful and ice cream sundaes are yummy. But, we made our own fun. We celebrated love to its very core. Caring for someone in their time of need, cuddling, playing, creating and enjoying our extra time together.
