Imagine Dragons, Dragon Dances and Lily

Lily loves the band Imagine Dragons. Especially the song “It’s Time” she calls it her song. She knows the words and sings it. I’m actually playing it right now as I type and she unconsciously started bopping her body up and down, after loudly announcing, “It’s MY song!”

A local library had a celebration to kick off their summer reading program. As part of this celebration, there were many activities including miniature horses and a dragon dance. Both girls were sure to be amused. As far as Lily is concerned, Imagine Dragons has something to do with mythical dragons, and they were somehow related.

First up: Miniature Horses. What’s not to love? They’re adorable and super friendly.

The girls were able to brush the horses, they were in little girl heaven.

Next up: Dragon Dance. In full disclosure, the girls actually know what a dragon dance is, thanks to a very informative episode of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. However, to see it in its full spectacle along with loud drumming in a library conference room was something else. We figured our sensory-sensitive Ella would get nervous and want to leave and adventure seeking Lily would love it. Boy were we wrong. Let’s illustrate how wrong we were by some photos of the girls’ reactions.

The red dragon did a playful dance in which it ate a giant container of candy, got a stomach ache and then “vomited” that candy out at the audience, showering the children in candy. The children loved it, especially Ella who still talks about the dragon that “frowed up”.

Lily maintains she liked the dragon dance, but clarifies that she didn’t like the red one, but she did like the blue one. She didn’t like either one when they were dancing. But she did like the red one when it threw up. That review, paired with the pictures above leads me to believe it will be awhile before she voluntarily seeks out another dragon dance. Apparently, exposing your children to the arts can sometimes lead to future therapy. *shrug*
