Boo x 2

T’was the night of September 30. We were getting the girls tucked into bed when the doorbell rang. We shrugged it off and continued with bedtime stories. A second ring. A second ignore (when you live in new construction, everyone shows up to solicit their lawn/pest control/blind, etc services). When the girls were all tucked in and lights out, Loran peeked outside and found a Halloween theme. We had been Boo’d!

This is a rather new phenomenon to me, I’d only first heard of it when Ella was a small tot. Basically, a neighbor anonymously places a container of Halloween themed goodies on their neighbor’s doorstep and runs. The recipient is then charged with passing on the deed to two more neighbors. You hang a sign on your door saying you’ve been “Boo’d” so your doorstep isn’t overflowing with goodies.

It goes without saying that the girls were thrilled! Candy, tattoos, glow necklaces – everything that makes a young child swoon.

Tuesday, I headed off to Target to get some Boo supplies and the girls and I built our buckets for our neighbors. The girls were so excited to be sneaky. Lily was in charge of the bucket next door and both girls “covertly” in the cover of mid-afternoon. After they placed the bucket, they kept running across the yard to see if it had been retrieved. They’re totally cut out to be spies.

Ella was in charge with Madison’s bucket. This was tricky because Madison’s family spends a lot of time outside. The girls kept running across the yard to sneak peeks over the orange construction fence. Then they’d run back to hide. Finally, after a lot of back and forth to the fence, the family walked down the street to visit another neighbor and the girls moved in. The bucket was placed and they tore back home.

So…these Boos are supposed to be a secret. However, we completely blew our cover. Later in the evening, I noticed Madison’s bucket hadn’t been retrieved. Since there were candies and crackers in hers, I sent her mom a text so they wouldn’t find a family of raccoons on their front porch in the morning. Of course, when the family was telling Ella and Lily the amazing news that they had been Boo’d and they didn’t know who had done it, Ella busted out, “It was me! We did it!” Second secret was blown when our next door neighbor brought cookies to us. She hadn’t been at the door for ten seconds when Lily came running up yelling, “we Boo’d you!” So, there was that. Hold you calls CIA. They aren’t quite ready for any Top Secret knowledge. As their mother, I’ll take this transparency.

Friday evening, we returned from the pool party to find another Boo on our doorstep. This one is a complete mystery. No idea who was behind it, but of course, the girls are over the moon! If they have any say, they’ll be leaving temporarily anonymous packages at everyone’s door, year-round!
