While at Lily’s conference, her teacher mentioned the Narrows Recreation Area as a place we should check out. One Saturday, we were off. Once we got there, we realized we’d actually been there once, last year, but just drove in and out. This time, we got out to explore. It’s supposed to be a boating area/boat launch but the river is so low, the boat launch ends with several hundred feet of land left before the water starts. The river should be at least 30 feet higher.
Loran started wading out in the water. Next thing I know, he’s on the other side of the river. According to Google maps, it should have taken him 9 hours to walk back to where we were on the other side of the river. He waded across in about two minutes, never getting deeper than his calves.

Once we were done playing in the water, tossing rocks and admiring large dead fish on the shore (due to hawks/eagles) we headed back up the river bank to the parking lot to fly our new kites. The girls enjoyed kite flying, despite the fact that the wind was pretty light. They were willing to run around the empty parking lot to keep their kites aloft.
We ended our outing with a stop to Opie’s BBQ – a family favorite. The girls, especially Ella, are really starting to enjoy BBQ beyond eating their weight in white bread. Ella loves the spicy jalapeño and cheese sausage, which is impressive considering it has quite the kick, which she quells with white bread. We sat next to a man who was singing and playing guitar for the crowd, which the girls loved. All in all, a nice spring day in the Texas Hill Country.
